Couple photo session: you don't need to get married to have photos you fall in love with

Eric Blasco·July 8, 2026·7 min

There’s an idea stuck in almost everyone’s head: that beautiful couple photos, the proper professional kind, are a wedding thing. That until there’s a ring and a banquet, it’s not the moment.

And that’s a shame, because it isn’t true.

You don’t need to get married to have gorgeous photos of the two of you. You don’t need a milestone anniversary, an excuse or a reason that sounds “important”. All you need is to feel like keeping each other safely stored away. Today we’ll tell you why a couple photo session is one of the best gifts you can give yourselves (or give to someone you love), and what to do with those photos afterwards so they don’t end up in a folder on your phone.

You don’t need a wedding (or an excuse) to keep each other safely stored away

An anniversary. A pregnancy. You’ve just moved into a new flat. You’ve been together ten years, or ten months. You got dressed up today. Or none of the above: you simply love each other and you feel like it.

Any of those reasons works. And there’s one that beats them all: the face you have today won’t come back. Ten years from now you’ll love seeing how you looked at each other, how you laughed, what your hair was like, what your small first flat looked like. Photos don’t just capture who you are: they capture how you’re being happy at this particular moment, and that moment doesn’t repeat itself.

What couple photos are actually for (beyond the memory)

This is where a lot of people are surprised. Good couple photos don’t end up “on the computer and that’s it”. They have concrete uses that make them worth every euro:

  • To decorate your home. A big print of the two of you in the living room says far more than any bought poster. It’s your home, with your story on the wall.
  • As your phone wallpaper. You look at your phone a hundred times a day. Let the first thing you see be the two of you, not a stock image.
  • For your social media. Posts that genuinely represent you, not the blurry photo a waiter took. Beautiful content for Instagram that is also 100% yours.
  • As something tangible. An album, a print for the bedside table, a copy for your parents. Things you can touch, things that last.
  • As a gift. And this one deserves a pause.

The gift that doesn’t end up in a drawer

Think about it for a second: what do you give your partner that isn’t, once again, an object that will end up in a drawer? Perfume, clothes, gadgets, they’re all fine, but they run out, get forgotten or get replaced.

A photo session is something else. It’s an experience and a memory at the same time: an afternoon together, laughing, doing something different, and afterwards images that will last a lifetime. Research on happiness keeps repeating it: experiences make us happier than things, because they stay and live in our memory. And this one, on top of that, you can hang on the wall.

It works for Valentine’s Day, for an anniversary, for a birthday or for the classic “just because”. And if you like, it can be given as a voucher: you give your partner the gift, and then you pick the date together. Few surprises land quite so well.

“But we don’t know how to pose” (spoiler: even better)

This is the sentence we hear most, and it’s almost always the reason a couple has been putting it off for years. So let’s get it out of the way: you don’t have to know how to pose. In fact, the less you “pose”, the better you look.

A good couple session isn’t about standing stiffly in front of the camera. It’s walking, playing, hugging, laughing at the initial awkwardness, moving. We guide you with simple things (walk over there, whisper something to each other, don’t look at the camera) and the best photos happen exactly when you forget we’re there. The shyness lasts ten minutes; what’s left are real photos of you, not two rigid people staring down the lens.

What a couple session with us is like

No mystery: first we chat for a while to get to know your vibe and what you fancy. We choose a location together that means something to you. On the day we spend around an hour or an hour and a half, unhurried, guiding you the whole time. Afterwards you get a gallery with the edited photos, ready to print, share or set as your wallpaper that same evening.

Ideas for where to shoot (Tarragona and surroundings)

We live in a beautiful area for this, and each place gives your photos a different character:

  • The beach at sunset, with that golden light that flatters everything.
  • The old town of Tarragona, stone and 2,000 years of history in the background.
  • A lavender field or the Priorat vineyards, if you’re after something postcard-worthy.
  • The mountains, for couples who love nature and calm.
  • Your own home. Yes, really: a session at home, in pyjamas, with coffee and your dog, is about as intimate and real as it gets.

Our approach at Lifetime Weddings

At Lifetime Weddings we don’t take catalogue photos, neither at weddings nor at couple sessions. We like what’s natural, what moves you, what will make you smile years from now. As your wedding photographer in Tarragona, we build each session around you. If this idea resonated, have a look at our work and, whenever you want to treat yourselves (or someone else) to a session, get in touch and we’ll set it up. And if what’s on your mind is a marriage proposal, we can help with that too.

Because you don’t have to wait for an important day to have important photos. Sometimes the best moment is, quite simply, today.

Frequently asked questions about couple photo sessions

How much does a couple photo session cost? It depends on the length, the location and what you want to take home (digital gallery, album, prints). Write to us and we’ll send you the options with no commitment; there’s one for almost any budget, and you’ll always know what’s included before you decide.

How long does a session last? Usually between one hour and an hour and a half. That’s plenty of time to relax, shake off the shyness and get a good variety of photos without it dragging on.

We don’t know how to pose and we don’t like being photographed. Is this for us? Yes, especially for you. You don’t have to pose: we guide you with games and movement, and the best images come when you forget about the camera. The initial shyness disappears fast.

Can a photo session be given as a gift? Of course. It’s one of the gifts people are most excited to receive. We give you a voucher to hand to your partner (or whoever you like) and then you choose the date together.

When do we get the photos, and what should we wear? The edited gallery arrives within a few days. As for clothes, we advise you beforehand based on the location and the style: the idea is that you’re comfortable and recognisably yourselves, not in costume.
